Demotivational Posters II

by | Friday, July 23, 2010

A few weeks ago I posted a note about an assignment I gave my students in the on-campus version of the MAET program. They had completed an unit on motivation and had watched the RSA / Daniel Pink video and their task was was to create demotivational posters, (along the lines of those on despair.com) using ideas either from their readings/discussions or from the Pink video.

The posters were a huge success. In fact Daniel Pink tweeted them (Thanks Daniel) and lots of his followers ended up on my website to see the work done by the students, which is all very cool.

Well, I am now in Rouen, France, meeting with the students in the off-campus MAET program. I got a chance to work with each of the groups (representing year 1, 2 & 3) and had them create similar posters as well. So now we have a total of 17(!) posters. It is interesting to see just how different they are, even the ones that tackle the same concept do it differently.

I have included all of the posters below  — the one’s from East Lansing as well as the one’s created here at Rouen. Click on the words to see the posters (the names of the students who created them is provided below each of the posters).

I can resist everything except temptation (or marshmallows)

Have you heard of the marshmallow experiment? It is a pretty famous experiment conducted at Stanford back in the 60's. Walter Mischel a psychologist conducted this experiment on four-year olds in which the children were given one marshmallow and promised a second...

MSU Fight Song: MAET style

The summer of 2015, there were 133 students and instructors in the hybrid and overseas components of the MAET program. These people were spread out across three locations: East Lansing, MI (with 2 cohorts, Yr1 and 2 of MAET); Chicago, IL (with 2 cohorts of the...

Transplanted Man

I just finished reading Transplanted Man by Sanjay Nigam. A strange but entirely fascinating and satisfying novel with quirky and interesting characters. Nigam is quite willing to tackle difficult and "big" questions but does it with a light touch. I had read his...

Slipping into uncanny valley

MindHacks has a great post related to some of my previous postings about anthropomorphizing interactive artifacts (see here and here) - just that this time these artifacts under discussion are robots. As it turns out, sometime too much similarity between humans and...

Update on “The TPACK story” Or “Oops!”

I had recently posted a video of my talk fall Doctoral Research Forum for the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College on the ASU West campus. As I had written in my post, "I thought it best to speak about the role of theory in research. This is something that...

ChatGPT3 writes a Mathematical Proof (in verse)

Many years ago I got interested in writing poetry about mathematics (all archived on my Math-Poetry page). Just to be clear, I am not a good poet (far from it) and I am even less of a mathematician—but it was a fun exercise to engage in. That said, a couple of my...

Creativity ambigram

Here's a new ambigram I designed at the kick-off for the MSU Creativity Initiative. I will have more information on that in a later post but for now... enjoy. Creativity, any which way you look at it.

Paige, I am glad you like these posters. I think we had a great deal of fun in this activity.

I was wondering what the copyright on these photos is? Would love to use the “Grading” on in my new blog post.
    What do you think?
These teachers did a GREAT job on these!

I was curious what the copyrights are on these posters. I just wrote a blog on getting rid of grades in my classroom. The Grading poster would be great addition to that post!
The teachers did a great job on all of these!

    Thanks, Paige

I was just looking over the demotivational posters again. The students in France also did a great job. I loved the Apathy one for sure and the Collaboration poster really speaks the truth in many instances. Many points to ponder.

Punya, I am excited to see the posters, but the links on the new posters actually take us to the posters created in the MSU summer cohort. I will stay tuned in:-)

Julie, the links have been fixed now. Sorry for the screwup, but I wanted to get this done before I left Rouen and guess what, in my hurry, I messed up.
