There are some articles that sink without a trace. There are others like our 2006 TCRecord article introducing the TPACK framework that continues to be cited… and then there are some that keep getting published over and over (albeit in an updated manner). Here is one of them… the gift that keeps on giving!

Back in 2007 Matt Koehler and I  presented a paper at the SITE conference introducing the idea of TPACK. Here is the complete citation:

Mishra, P. & Koehler, M.J. (2007). Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK): Confronting the Wicked Problems of Teaching with Technology. In R. Carlsen et al. (Eds.), Proceedings of Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education International Conference 2007 (pp. 2214-2226). Chesapeake, VA: AACE. Retrieved January 22, 2014 from http://www.editlib.org/p/24919.

We were think invited by the editors of the CITE journal to update this article to be published in a special issue devoted to TPACK. The updated article was published in 2009 (citation and link below).

Koehler, M. J., & Mishra, P. (2009). What is technological pedagogical content knowledge?Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education9(1). Retrieved from http://www.citejournal.org/vol9/iss1/general/article1.cfm

As it so happened, last year, we were invited to republish our CITE journal article for a special issue of Journal of Education devoted to Pedagogical Content Knowledge. Realizing that a lot of work has happened in the past 4-5 years (both in the arena of research and practice related to TPACK) it seemed silly to reprint the 2009 article. We asked if it would be ok to update the 2009 article and we were told ok. So here it is, a newer, shinier and updated version. We would like to thank the editor of the Journal of Education, Roselmina Indrisano for inviting us in the first place and to Glen Bull (editor of the CITE journal) for giving us permission to build on the previously published 2009 version. Here is the complete reference. Please get in touch with me if you have any problems accessing the article.

Math-Music, serious game design

My 8 year old daughter, Shreya, came to me the other day and said that she had designed a learning game. I asked her to draw it out for me and here is what she had created. The game is called Math Music and I guess, it builds on the Guitar Hero idea, but adds...

New ambigrams for AERA

I was invited to give two talks at the the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association in San Francisco. One was a Ignite presentation (5 minutes, 20 slides set to move at 15 seconds per slide), and the other was an ED Talk (sort of like a TED talk...

Total eclipse of the moon

Tonight was a full lunar eclipse - the last one we will have till December 2010. Lucky for us we had a pretty clear sky - a welcome change from the past few days. Shreya and Soham and I tracked it since it started till it was almost complete - and then they had to go...

How artists work

An interesting (and growing) collection of "habits, rituals and small (and occasionally big) methods people and teams use to get their work done. And in the specific anecdotes and the way people describe their own relationship to their own work." Kind of cool and...

3 super-short stories

3 super-short stories

Students in my EDT180 class spent some time yesterday writing short stories. Super short stories, trying to tell a complete story in just 55 words! As it turns this (55 Fiction) is actually a thing – as a simple google search will reveal. Seeing my students engage in...

TPACK in the SAGE Encyclopedia of Ed Tech

The SAGE Encyclopedia of Educational Technology, edited by Dr. Michael Spector just got published. We have one article in it on (no surprise there) TPACK! Koehler, M., & Mishra, P. (2015). TPACK (technological pedagogical content knowledge). In J. Spector (Ed.),...

Shreya makes the newspaper!

For Halloween, my daughter, Shreya's fifth grade class entertained a bunch of first-graders with a spooky music and dance show. A news reporter was there and her photo (Shreya's not the news reporter's) ended up on the cover of The Towne Courier, the local community...

Microblogging in the classroom

I have written quite a bit about how a technology can become an educational technology (see this, this, this and this). This is a non-trivial task that all educators face, and requires situational creativity in re-purposing / re-designing the existing tool to meet...
