What Vocabulary Drives Each Theme?

A theme can persist while the words that define it completely change. Here we look inside.

The streamgraph showed themes rising and falling over six years. But a theme's name can stay constant while its vocabulary transforms completely.

The streamgraphs show which themes rose and fell across six years. But a theme can persist while the words that define it completely change. Here we look inside each theme to see what vocabulary drives it, and how that vocabulary has shifted over six years.

Each of the twelve themes is defined by a keyword dictionary, a set of weighted terms whose frequency in each episode's transcript produces its thematic score. The table below lists every keyword that contributed to each theme across all 264 episodes, ordered from highest to lowest cumulative contribution. Some themes have richer vocabularies than others. The visual density itself tells a story about how broad or focused each conversation has been.

How the Vocabulary Shifts

When we traced how these keyword profiles shift year by year, five patterns stood out.

Vocabulary Churn Varies Dramatically. Not all themes evolve at the same rate. AI & Emerging Tech has the highest vocabulary turnover: its top-ranked keywords change nearly every year, with fewer than half of its eight most important keywords carrying over from one year to the next. In 2020, the theme was anchored by "VR," "immersive," and "simulation." By 2025, those words have vanished, replaced by "generative ai," "machine learning," and "chatgpt." The theme survived; the vocabulary transformed entirely. By contrast, SEL & Wellbeing is the most stable theme, more than four out of five top keywords persist year after year.

Sudden Arrivals. Some keywords appear from nowhere and immediately dominate. "Generative ai" does not exist in the data before 2023. It appears that year and immediately claims the #2 position in the AI theme, holding it through 2025. This is the vocabulary signature of a field-disrupting concept, visible in the data as a step function, not a gradual climb.

The Pandemic Fade. "Pandemic" remains the #1 keyword in its theme every single year, but its contribution drops from a peak of 370 to just 42 by 2026. The crisis language slowly bleeds out, but six years later, the conversation still can't entirely leave it behind. Meanwhile, "learning loss" peaks in 2022 and then fades. "Post-pandemic" appears in 2023. The vocabulary tracks the stages of collective processing.

The Caution Vocabulary Is Remarkably Stable. Tech as Enabler, the persistent insistence that technology is a means, not an end, has among the most stable vocabulary in the dataset. "Human," "pedagogy," "design," "context," and "relationship" trade the top positions year after year. The concern hasn't changed, even as what it cautions against has shifted from ed-tech solutionism to AI hype.

Structural Persistence. Equity's vocabulary is anchored. "Access" dominates in every single year. "Barrier," "marginalized," "rural" are always present. Unlike AI (where new words displace old ones) or Pandemic (where words fade), Equity's keyword profile barely changes. The problem hasn't changed. Neither has the language for describing it.
