The Impact of TPACK

Matt Koehler and I worked TPACK out on the fifth floor of Erickson Hall at Michigan State, in conversations and arguments that ran over several years. Neither of us had any idea it would travel. This page is a record of where it went.

What the field did with it

Judi Harris edited the TPACK Newsletter for years and kept count of the literature as it grew. From 2006 1999 to 2008, the framework produced 18 articles, 15 chapters, one book and 8 dissertations. Not too bad. But then it blew up. By March 2024 the running totals were 3,308 articles, 575 chapters, 31 books and 805 dissertations. Judi counted 4,719 publications in all, and that excludes conference presentations and mentions in the popular press. Also, to be clear, these are not citations of the model, these are articles, books, chapters that used TPACK as a foundational framework for thinking about technology integration.

Counts compiled by Judi Harris, as of March 2024. More at tpack.pages.wm.edu.

Teaching Teachers for the Future

In 2011 and 2012 the Australian government put AU$8.8 million, through the Department of Employment, Education and Workplace Relations and the ICT Innovation Fund, into building the technology capacity of the next generation of Australian teachers. The project was organized around TPACK, and a national TPACK survey instrument was built and administered for it across the country’s teacher education institutions.

The handbooks

The first Handbook of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Educators came out in 2008, published by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education’s Committee on Innovation and Technology. The second edition followed in 2016 edited with Mary Herring, Matt Koehler and me. A third edition came out in 2025, with Michael Phillips, Evrim Baran, Matt and me.

The special interest group

Matt, Judi Harris, Mario Kelly and I founded the TPACK Special Interest Group at the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education in 2007. It has been among the largest and most active groups in that organization ever since, run by people who have nothing to do with us.

The newsletter

Judi’s TPACK Newsletter ran for years and tracked the literature issue by issue. The archive is on this site.

There is also a page of silly TPACK images, which is the other kind of impact.
