Visual Wordplay

Ambigrams, fractal typography, words built in three dimensions, letterforms made with AI, and quotations given visual shape. Different games, one rule: the form is the constraint, and the constraint is the point. A word has to do more than one thing at once — read upside down, repeat at every scale, hold two languages, mean what it looks like.

Ambigrams & Fractals

Words that read as themselves, or as different words, when rotated or reflected — plus fractal typography that repeats at every scale. See the video below for some examples and stories.

3D Words

Letterforms with depth, which sometimes become another word entirely once you move around them.

Typography & AI

Designs made in collaboration with generative AI — a partner that proposes, misreads and occasionally surprises.

Language Art

Quotations given visual form. Keynote, mostly Futura, a deliberately narrow palette.

Writing about all this

With Gaurav Bhatnagar I wrote a five-part series, Of Art and Math, for At Right Angles — on ambigrams, symmetry, self-similarity and mathematical paradox. All five are collected in a single PDF. The thread continues in Connecting Math to Verbo-Visual Art (2024).

Shown and noticed

In 2015 this work was the subject of a solo exhibition at the MSU Museum — Deep-Play: Creativity in Math & Art through Visual Wordplay. The designs have also turned up on National Geographic’s Brain Games, on a German magazine cover, and in the books Eye Twisters, Ambigrams Revealed and The Art of Deception.
