One of the ideas we have been exploring in my transdisciplinary creativity class this semester, is that of how generative AI can serve as a bridge between seemingly disparate fields. In this post, I want to share the results of an ongoing experiment demonstrating the potential of AI in creating connections between scientific concepts and artistic expression.
My first experiment was to ask the AI music generator tool to create a song about the Periodic table, which it did. But the results were not as insightful and interesting, scientifically or artistically, as I would have liked.
For my next round, I went to Claude – I provided a somewhat straightforward prompt – to create lyrics for a song about the Second Law of Thermodynamics that captures both its scientific essence and its “unfair beauty.” This prompt was intentionally designed to push the AI to bridge the technical and the poetic.
I chose this topic because the Second Law of Thermodynamics and the concept of entropy are foundational to our understanding of the universe, yet they can be perceived as abstract and intimidating. There is a profound sadness to the idea of everything becoming chaos, and our inability to change that.Moreover, there is a strange beauty to this awareness of transience and inevitability of the heat death of the universe.
Claude not only created a song it also gave some tips on what the song should sound like, all of which I tweaked a bit and entered into Suno. I created a few versions and am sharing two of them below – mainly to demonstrate how different these versions are—one embracing a melancholic, contemplative tone, while the other took a more upbeat approach.
To be clear, there isn’t anything highly innovative here – but I do see possibilities for future exploration. For instance, we could try translating scientific concepts into unexpected art forms – imagine quantum entanglement expressed through dance, cell division through visual art, or gravitational waves through poetry. Or explore surprising combinations like turning economic principles into music, psychological theories into architecture, or mathematical proofs into choreography. The key is asking AI to act as a bridge, explaining one domain through the lens of another. This approach works especially well when you ask AI to maintain both technical accuracy and creative expression – as we did with our entropy song, which revealed the unexpected lyricism in thermodynamics. In essence, any complex concept can potentially be transformed through an artistic lens, and any artistic medium can serve as a vehicle for technical ideas.
This kind of AI-enabled transdisciplinary creativity raises interesting questions about the knowledge teachers need to possess. As I have written elsewhere, generative AI reshapes the kinds of knowledge educators need to have (their TPACK as it were). AI is now a knowledgeable partner in the teaching/learning process. This, however, doesn’t diminish the teacher’s role; if anything, it elevates the importance of pedagogical judgment. Teachers must still evaluate the accuracy of AI-generated content, gauge its appropriateness for their students, and understand how to scaffold these creative exercises effectively. We’re not replacing teacher knowledge but rather augmenting it with an “alien intelligence” that can help us see new connections and possibilities.
