Over the years, our column series in TechTrends has explored the evolving relationship between technology, creativity, and education. Recently, we’ve been particularly focused on understanding how generative AI is reshaping teaching and learning through conversations with thought leaders in the field. In our latest piece, my colleagues (Danah Henriksen, Nicole Oster, Lindsey McCaleb) and I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Mairéad Pratschke, Professor and Chair in Digital Education at the University of Manchester.
Dr. Pratschke brings a unique perspective to the AI in education conversation. With over 25 years of experience in digital innovation spanning multiple continents, disciplines, and languages, she offers fresh insights into how generative AI can transform education while maintaining a strong commitment to creativity, interdisciplinary thinking, and ethical responsibility. Her historical lens and dedication to cultural preservation inform her vision for AI’s future in education – one that prioritizes human creativity and ethical considerations.
What makes our conversation with Dr. Pratschke particularly compelling is how she challenges us to think beyond the typical narratives around AI in education. She sees AI not just as a tool, but as a potential partner in fostering creativity and learning, while remaining mindful of its limitations and ethical implications. Her new book, “Generative AI and Education,” adds significantly to our understanding of AI’s role in education, particularly its impact on creativity, cultural identity, and equity.
