Creative Learning for Sustainability in a World of AI: Action, Mindset, Values

by | Friday, May 24, 2024

How can we ensure that education keeps pace and remains relevant In a world where technology evolves at lightning speed and global challenges seem more daunting than ever?

In a recently published article, Danah Henriksen, Rachel Stern and I propose a framework that brings together sustainability principles and creative teaching methods, showing how AI can be a powerful tool in this blend.

At the heart of our framework is the idea that sustainability isn’t just a topic to be taught but a mindset to be cultivated. By combining this mindset with creative pedagogies, educators can foster environments where students learn to solve problems in innovative, and sustainable ways. AI, particularly generative AI, offers exciting possibilities for personalized learning and engaging students in addressing real-world sustainability issues. However, it also comes with its own set of challenges, including environmental and ethical concerns that must be carefully managed. The goal is to equip teachers with the tools and mindset needed to support creative learning and problem-solving, ensuring that technology serves as an ally in our quest for a better world. Our article navigates these complexities, providing strategic insights for educators to leverage technology responsibly for a sustainable and just future.

Reading Obama, and getting it right!

I rarely if ever blog about politics - though I follow it avidly. I spend large parts of my day reading the news, keeping up with what is going on. Most of my news gathering happens online (the little TV I watch, usually the Daily Show, also happens online). And it is...

Palindromic Poetry

A few years ago I got bitten by the bug of Palindromic Poetry - poems that double back on themselves, that can be read this way, or that. This is consistent with my love for ambigrams and other kinds of symmetrical wordplay. Take a look...

A few weeks back, Sean Leahy – friend, tech aficionado, futurist, and the co-host of the Learning Futures Podcast – reached out to me via email with an intriguing proposal. He was playing with the concept of harnessing generative AI to craft Halloween stories. The aim...
